One of the main sponsors of the New York Regional Championships is Epoch Lacrosse. The Minnesota-based lacrosse design and technology company will be providing gear for each team in the tournament. Epoch partners with professional leagues and college teams including the Army West Point men’s lacrosse team. Nick Garofano is a senior captain for the Black Knights and a native of Yorktown Heights, NY.
With West Point being just a half-hour drive from his hometown, Garofano gets to play home games in front of friends and family. Although he went to prep school in Massachusetts, his hometown will always be special. “Yorktown is a place I will always hold near and dear to my heart,” Garofano said. “It’s the place where my passion for the game began. A rich tradition of lacrosse and competition is woven into the fabric of that community. It’s a cool feeling to have my former coaches and best friends nearby to still support me. Everything has truly come full circle.”
Showcases gave Garofano the opportunity to get recruited and the school so close to home caught his attention. “During a summer while I was in high school, [Army Associate Head] Coach Georgalas noticed me at a Lacrosse Showcase and invited me to visit the school and play in the Black Knight 50 1-day camp so the rest of the coaching staff could have the chance to meet me and watch me play,” Garofano said. “After meeting the guys on the team – they were the ones that sold me.”
Garofano was attracted to a culture committed to success. “It was evident that those guys in the locker room were invested in winning and achieving a level of excellence that was uncommon relative to the other schools I visited,” Garofano said. “My 15 or 16-year-old self wanted to be a part of that in the worst way possible.”
Embarking on his final season at Army, Garofano knows he made the right choice. “[My experience has been] nothing short of extraordinary,” he said. “It’s been a gritty 4 years and I wouldn’t have made it without the men on my team and my parents’ unwavering support but I am privileged to be surrounded by the highest caliber of individuals. The only thing that would make this experience that much more special would be my class and I capping off our college lacrosse careers with a Conference title and winning the national championship. That’s our goal. Regardless of outcomes, I am beyond blessed to have the teammates and coaches I have – people who are willing to invest so much of themselves for the collective advancement of the Army Lacrosse Family.”
When the 2021 New York State Regional Championships kick-off, kids from all over the state will get the opportunity to be noticed by college coaches and scouts wearing the same Epoch gear that Garofano wears on the field in every game. The tournament can become that showcase that begins the recruiting process for a young athlete.
